Backstage at Betsey Johnson’s Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week Presentation

Most designers have a runway show where models will walk down straight faced on a white runway against a white backdrop with their name on it.  Betsey Johnson has established herself as the 67 year old fashion designer that can still do cartwheels and with such, she shows her clothes in a different way.  This year the Betsey Johnson Presentation aka 80s party was held at The Plaza Hotel in New York City which overlooks Central Park.

With my Canon 5D Mark II just six days old, I shot mostly video backstage, but here are a few snap shots of models backstage.  Hopefully, in a couple weeks I will be able to post some videos.  =]  Camera info is  ISO 1000,  1/125, ~f4, with a Canon 16-35mm Lens shot with a Canon 580ex II Flash + bounce card.

My exciting life…Photographing a Kitchen Remodel

October 24, 2009

Philadelphia, PA -  I get emails all the time from people saying how exciting my life must be.  Well, the other day I took photos of a kitchen and bathroom remodel.  I am really living on the edge of excitement =]]  This is my first interior shoot and it was quick and simple for a local home renovator. After I printed out his photos, within 48-hours he had landed another $18,000 remodeling jobs.  Needless to say he was happy with the photographs and thought of it as a good investment.

I did all the staging in the kitchen which I am slightly proud of it.  I used a Canon 1D Mark II + 24-70L + Canon 580EX II flash.  It was a quick shoot and if given more time I would have set the lighting up differently to remove some of the glare on the granite and to be honest, I think the staging is the most important part.  Not sure what else to say. So, as they say in Hollywood…that’s a wrap.

Julie in Black & White

August 25, 2009:  Chapel Hill, NC -  I had some down time in Charlotte and decided to call up one of my tall friends, Julie.  Pretty much most of my work has been photojournalism.  I’m just capturing what is in front of me. So, I really want to start using strobes and start being a bit artistic.  I’ve been on a big black and white kick lately with the help of my Holga…That blue, yellow, and pink camera ;)   We used a gridded Alien Bee beauty dish as the main and a square softbox on the floor pointed about 45-degrees upwards for fill.

I love big hair on the runway and wanted to make Julie’s hair as big as possible.  Keep in mind, its usually a wig or at the very least extensions on the runway.  Rosie Hardy of Flickr fame was kind enough to “backcomb for days” as I put it.  This was the 3rd shot I took and well, I liked it the best.  I wanted low depth of field. So, the camera stats at ISO 100,  f/4, 1/160th at 140mm.  I was using a Canon 5D Mark II + 70-200L.

Bernard Hopkins vs Enrique Ornelas Press Conference

October 14, 2009 : Philadelphia, PA – I was lucky enough to shoot for Golden Boy Promotions today which is run by Oscar de la Hoya. I covered the “Broad Street Brawl” press conference for their scheduled fight in December 2nd on Temple University’s campus.  Philadelphia has a long boxing heritage of boxing and is most famous for Joe Frazier, Rocky Balboa, and of course Bernard Hopkins.
Although these photos are nothing much, I just wanted to update my blog and get the word out on the fight as I genuinely feel that Bernard is doing this more for Philadelphia than himself.  I know he has something to prove, but he could have taken a lot more money to fight in Atlantic City.  Hopefully, brings a spark to North Philly and is a good start to bringing boxing back to the city.
